Quiet Winter Farm
When did I never not love dogs and horses?.. As A child I would visit my neighbors home
every chance I got. He had a wonderful farm where pythons where in the bathtub, red foxes
had a habitat built right off his bank barn and horses and dogs where everywhere you
turned. It wasnt unusual to find a golden eagle rehabbing at his house with a broken wing,
or some other ailment. Exotic looking people with heavy foreign accents where always
popping in to sit at the huge oak table and smoke ciggaretts the air was full of mystery and
intrigue.. Ohh did I mention that he was a famous writer? He was the author of the book "The
Fox and the Hound "which became a famous Walt Disney Movie! It is also believed that his
writings where the original inspiration for the movie Gladiator. He also was in the Circus
as a sword swallower, even listed one time as swallowing the longest sword in the world! He
always had time for any question I would throw at him, and I had a lot regarding animals!
But most of all he was my friend who helped to foster the love of all that is unusual and
beautiful, oh, and of course my love for animals. I miss you Mr Mannix you where a true
Friend. Jacquie

"For horses can educate through first hand, subjective, personal experiences, unlike human
tutors, teachers, and professors can ever do. Horses forge the mind, the character, the
emotions and inner lives of humans. People can talk to one another about all these things and
remain distanced and lonesome. In partnership with a horse, one is seldom lacking for thought,
emotion and inspiration. One is always attended by a great companion." - Charles de Kunffy

I grew Up with Irish Setters... One in particular taught
me more then any other dog in my childhood...Having
Samson in my life for over 8 years was a true gift. He
taught me so much, but his most important lesson
was to honor the dog nature in our Setters.. He was a
dignified, majestic leader in the dog world, and He
had no patience for those who treated him like a to
value the intelligence, independence and competence
of a talented animal. I will never forget, Dear Sam !
Thank you for your dedication, love and Talent ..
Through the memory of you , I will try to remember
and respect the dog nature in all canines.
We have a secret, you and I, that no one else shall know,
For who but I can see you lie each night in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand before we go to bed
And feel the living warmth of you and touch your silken
head?
And only I walk woodland paths and see ahead of me,
Your small form racing with the wind so young again, and
free.
And only I can see you swim in every brook I pass
And when I call, no one but I can see the bending grass.
If you have men who will exclude
any of God's creatures from the
shelter of compassion and pity,
likewise with their fellow
men.likewise with their fellow
men.
- St. Francis of Assisi
“I think it’s just as likely that someone could say this place,
right here, is heaven, hell, and earth all at the same time.
And we still wouldn’t know what to do differently. Everyone
just muddles through, trying not to make too many
mistakes.” Trudy, in The Story of Edgar Sawtelle- David

Nobody can fully understand the meaning of love unless he's owned a dog. He can show you more
honest affection with a flick of his tail than a man can gather through a lifetime of handshakes. I
can't think of anything that brings me closer to tears than when my old dog--completely exhausted
after a full and hard day in the field--limps away from her nice spot in front of the fire and comes
over to where i'm sitting and puts her head in my lap, a paw over my knee, and closes her eyes and
goes back to sleep. I don't know what I've done to deserve that kind of friend."

The undeniable fact is that any species’ pursuit of its interests will always have an impact on the rest of
the planet’s life-the fox impacting on the chicken population, the flea on the cat, the beaver on the forest,
and the sheep on the grass. Living in a bubble, where one’s individual actions (let alone those of one’s
entire species) have only a benign effect, or none at all, on other living things, is not an option. Such
moral purity simply doesn’t exist. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, in The River Cottage Meat Book. 2004.

How many dogs does it take to
screw in a lightbulb?
SHIBA-INU:
Zero! Shiba's aren't afraid of the dark!
SCHIPPERKE:
It's your lightbulb-change it yourself. Unless...is there food involved?
POODLE:
Sorry, Just had my nails done
BEAGLE:
How many cookies do I get?
WEIMANARANER:
Light bulb? You want ME to change a LIGHTBULB??
LAB:
Why change it? The darker it is, the longer I can sleep.
BASENJI:
LIGHTBULB?? We don't change no steenking lightbulbs!!
MALAMUTE:
Let him do it, you can pet me while he's busy.
BOXER:
If I could stop wiggling my butt long enough to quit falling off the
chair..........
AMERICAN BULLDOG:
One. JUMP,remove bulb , land. JUMP, replace bulb, land .
Two: What lightbulb? So? We can play in the dark.
GOLDEN RETRIEVER:
"I'll be glad to change the light bulb for you, but first
can't we play catch with the tennis ball, or frisbee - and
then I want to lick your face and rest my head in your lap
and look up at you with my sad eyes. What, you're changing
the light bulb yourself - you didn't have to do that - but I
looooove you so much for being my friend and doing that."
DALMATIAN:
Just one, but it will really hate the new bulb.
ROTTWEILER:
I'll change the light bulb if I can eat the old one.
CORGI:
I cant reach the stupid lamp!
SPRINGER:
Lightbulb? Lightbulb? That thing I just ate was a lightbulb?
DOBERMAN:
Immediately decides to change the brand of lightbulb and
find a more efficient form of lighting--perhaps a fluorescent bulb.
STANDARD POODLE:
None. Go get human, sit under it, look up and point it out--
then go lie down in disgust that it took so long.
BORDER COLLIE:
Just one. And he'll rewire the house while he's at it.
GOOD OL' SOUTHERN HOUND DOG:
HUH????
IRISH SETTER:
It only takes one Irish Setter, but it will put in a really dim bulb.
MINI DACHSHUND:
Well first get me a ladder and a treat...no you took too long I
want two treats and I'll do it... no Not that treat the other kind geez...
do I have to do everything? of course followed by the "look".
GERMAN SHEPHERD:
I'm kinda busy right now I have to chase the cat, protect the kids,
herd the horses, beg for food and take a nap.
I'll add the light bulb to my To Do list...
AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD:
One, but just *try* to convince them that the
burned-out bulb is useless and should be thrown away.
JACK RUSSELL TERRIER:
Two, but the job never gets done--they just keep arguing
about who is supposed to do it and how it's supposed to be done!
BULLDOG:
Just one. But it takes them three years to do it.
POMERANIANS:
Don't change light bulbs, although sometimes their agent will
get a German Shepherd in to do the job for them while they're out.
PUG:
Er, two. Or maybe one. No-- on second thought, make that two.
Is that OK with you?
GOLDEN RETRIEVER:
The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of
us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned-out light bulb?
AFGHAN:
Lightbulb? What lightbulb?
CAT:
I don't waste my time with these childish jokes.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated
philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

I'm amazed by the roller coaster of life, how one friend can be whining about something trivial at the same time that another is expressing gratitude for the smallest of blessings, while still others are scoring major victories or suffering terrible losses. We all seem to get our turn at it all. Tonight I am grateful f...or another pretty much uneventful yet very full day. By Eric Thompson Baldwin
