All About the Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America wants to help you in your
search for the perfect companion by giving you some basic background
information about Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

ORIGINS

Legend has it that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an "enchanted" dog, and
certainly this must be true! 'Tis said he was used by the fairies and elves
of Wales to pull fairy coaches, work fairy cattle, and serve as a steed for
the fairy warriors. Even today those people with keen eyes and
understanding hearts may see the marks of the "fairy saddle" in the coat
over the shoulders.

Pembrokes have been used by the Welsh as herding dogs, family
companions, and guardians of the farm. They continue today to be
workers and companions for their owners. It is believed that their ancestry
dates back to at least the tenth century. It is unknown whether they are
descended from the Vallhunds (Swedish cattle dogs possibly brought to
Pembrokeshire by the Vikings) or from the ancestors of the present-day
Schipperkes and Pomeranians that were brought to Wales by Flemish
weavers.

In the 1920's Corgis were recognized as purebred dogs in the United
Kingdom. In 1934 the Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis were recognized by
the English Kennel Club as separate breeds. American Kennel Club
recognition of the two distinct breeds also occurred in that same year.

Pembrokes are sensitive and intelligent dogs. They are easily trained as
long as training is done with gentle handling and without severe physical
correction. They are healthy and long-lived dogs and are excellent
companions for either rural or urban families.

Many thanks to The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America for this
history of the breed.
* My puppies are raised in my home. They are whelped in the bedroom and raised in the house.
* My puppies are kept with their mother from birth thru weaning and long after the weaning process is over.
* My puppies are protected between 3 & 4 weeks old from any upset in their routine or environment. This time period
is very important and can have a lasting effect on their social attitudes. It is a time when their hearing and sight
improve. They become aware of their environment and seek the security of their mother.
* My puppies have hands on time with me each day starting from birth  then with my  family each evening starting at
4 weeks old.
* My puppies are socialized with friends starting at 5 weeks.
* My puppies start exploring the outdoors at 5 weeks old. and all the sights and sounds a farm has to offer..
* My puppies are exposed to  supervised time with children from birth, they are born in  my bedroom and raised in the
home .
* My puppies begin crate training before they go into their new homes.
* My puppies are trained using praise .

* My puppies are raised on a high quality dog food without preservatives and additives.
* My puppies are encouraged to explore and use their minds to play and problem solve thru exposure to different
environments, toys and climbing opportunities.
* My puppies have access to over  2 acres of fenced pasture to run free and develop muscle & Coordination.
* My puppies are exposed to my adult dogs who help teach them puppy manners.
* My puppies receive their puppy vaccinations here at home  by me an ex-Vet  assistant wich helps to reduce stress
at the Vets office.
* My puppies receive a full health exam at 7-8 weeks old with my Veterinarian.
* My puppies travel in my car to new places starting at 6 weeks old. This includes visiting other families  and
enviorments.
* My puppies are placed  AFTER   8 weeks old , this allows their mother to  play with them and teach them important
puppy manners. For example-  when a puppy nip is too hard.
* My puppies are placed matching their temperament to the life style of their new family
* My puppies have every opportunity to grow to be confident, secure, even tempered Pembroke Welsh Corgi
* My puppies are AKC Registered, securing that their pedigrees are on file and proper paperwork was processed.
* My puppies Sire & Dam have health clearance certificates for  OFA Hips, and CERF eyes.

A Dog's Purpose

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and
their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were
hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family
we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the
euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would
be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure They felt as
though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last
time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a
few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty
or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death,
wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than
human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know
why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next
stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life
-- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The
Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so
they don't have to stay as long.'

They are great.
Iggy, is great, as usual. Everyone loves him. I've given up trying to teach him not to jump up on
people because they all tell him to jump up, so they can pet him. It will be their fault when mud
season comes and they have big paw prints on their clean pants!!

A GALLANT

A MAIDEN FAIR,
WHO TO HIM
CRIED,

OH KINDLY

I`VE FALLEN

WOULD YOU,

HOW COULD I
LEAVE YOU IN

SO CLIMB UPON
MY BACK FAIR
MAID

I`LL TAKE YOU
HOME, AS YOU
HAVE BADE".

AND SO THE
CORGI STARTED
FORTH;

"MY HOME`S A

THEY
JOURNEYED
THERE, AND AT
HER DOOR

SHE CRIED, "I
SHOULD HAVE
SAID BEFORE,

I`M A FAIRY

5
And Now a word about PRICE
All my puppies are bred with the same health, temperament and conformation and they also all cost the same price. I
conformation isn't the only measure of quality. There's health and temperament to consider.
So my carefully planned breeding program produces litters of overall quality--to me, each puppy is of equal value,
whether or not they are show prospects. I know it is usually for my benefit that a pup be shown to its championship...not
the pet home I place it in. Litter prices are nearly constant because of demand. There is a much greater demand for pets
than show dogs, and in our free-market economy, the most sought-after products are not discounted. I do not have
bargain puppies. I prefer to find homes where my puppies will be kept as companions even though they may not finish
their championship.

Some breeders claim to know which puppy will turn out to be the show winner, but I've seen just too many pet homes
have the pick of the litter because the breeder didn't know what they were looking at when the pups were so young.
Bites change, puppies don't make size or the most gorgeous puppy had a tad lighter eyes than a judge would like and
the breeder sold it as a pet - only to realize that everything else was so nice, the judges would have overlooked the light
eyes as a minor flaw. I've been told that some breeders sell bitches for more than the males, which is also odd to me. I
don't do dogs for money. Some people blow lots of money on golf; I blow lots of money on my dogs. It's a hobby.

After you pay for the training lessons, seminars, vet bills, entry fees per show per day ($20 per dog), motel bills or
camping fees, blood tests and tests and certifications for eyes, hips, heart and others, stud fees and then all the vet bills
for the sonogram and trips before and after puppies...oh, not to forget about the dew claw and tail removal and
ears---responsible breeders never make money selling puppies. If they do, they're not doing all that responsible
breeders should do to raise a litter of puppies or they're raising too many puppies and can't possibly socialize them
properly.
Besides that, I'm breeding so I can have a companion puppy and a hopeful little one for the show ring. I guess people
who just go out and get a male and female from the pet store and start breeding and selling the puppies for the same
price as responsible breeders...now they might make money. And the puppy millers who just crate a bitch and breed the
heck out of her, then sell the puppies through the pet shops. Pet shops don't seem to care what the puppies have to live
through to get to the pet shop. Anyway, my bitches would only be bred twice...maybe three times in their life.
Responsible breeders just wouldn't be pumping puppies out constantly. Prior to breeding, a responsible breeder has the
expense of showing her breeding stock and earning championships. Add to that the cost of pre-breeding testing on the
dam and sire, stud fees, veterinary fees, the care and feeding of the puppies, inoculations, and more, and it's obvious
that this is not a profit-oriented endeavor. It is not a business or a livelihood. It's a hobby--one that's dedicated to
improving and protecting the breed, and nothing else.

Sorry, sometimes I get on my soapbox about all of that. The thing I don't like is for people to get on their high horse and
act like their show dog is better than a pet dog. That's absolutely ridiculous! I have had dogs in my house that didn't turn
out [oversized, neck was 1/2 inch too short to arch properly] and some people kept making comments that I should get
rid of the dead weight in my household. The only dead weight I would like to rid myself of is stupid people making stupid
comments about my very wonderful pets. -  Article By Don Worsham (Copyright)

Unlike some dog breeds, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi
does not have a traceable breed history. Its origins
are obscured by tales and folklore and even contain
ties to the wee folk of the British Isles. According to
legend, two children tending their family's cattle on
royal lands found a pair of puppies, which they
thought were foxes. When they brought the puppies
home, they were told the dogs were a gift from the
fairies. Welsh legends tell us that the fairies would
use the little dogs to pull their carriages or as
mounts for them to ride into battle. If you look, you
can still see the marks of the fairy saddle on their
shoulders (especially pronounced in the sable color).
As the little puppies that the children brought home
grew, they learned to help their humans watch over
their cattle, a task to become a responsibility for
their descendants for the centuries to follow.

That's the legend. The more commonly accepted
theory traces back to Scandinavian raiders bringing
their dogs with them to the British Isles, possibly as
far back as the 9th or 10th century. The Swedish
Vallhund is seen to bear many similarities to today's
Pembroke Welsh Corgi and is presumed to have
been bred with native Welsh dogs. Any of the
offspring that expressed cattle herding/driving traits
were no doubt selectively bred to enhance that skill.
It is also thought that the dogs brought over with
Flemish weavers, who settled in Pembrokeshire,
South Wales in the 12th century, were bred with the
local cattle dogs adding the Spitz characteristics that
the Pembroke Welsh Corgi expresses today.

The name of the breed is as difficult to nail down as
is its origin. One school combines the Welsh word
"cor" which means "to watch over or gather" with
"gi", a form of the Welsh word for dog. This was
certainly a responsibility of these small cattle herders
and homestead guardians. Another ascribes the
word corgi as the Celtic word for dog and that the
Norman invaders thereafter referred to any local dog
as a "cur" or mongrel. Finally, legend pops up again
with the interpretation that the word "cor" means
"dwarf". Combine that with the Welsh form for dog
"gi" and you have "dog of the dwarfs or "dwarf dog".
For many years Corgis (both breeds) were referred
to as either 'Ci-llathed' meaning "yard long dog"
(we're talking a Welsh yard here) or as 'Ci Sawdlo'
due to its nature of nipping at cattle's heels.

The breed was first officially exhibited as the Welsh
Corgi in England in 1925 and was eligible to compete
for challenge certificates in 1927. Both Pembrokes
and Cardigans were shown in the same classes as
one breed until 1934, when the Kennel Club (British)
separated the two breeds. The first Pembrokes
registered with the AKC appeared in 1934.
Pembrokes were first exhibited in the U.S. in 1936.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, is a
longtime Pembroke fancier. In 1933 her father, then
the Duke of York (later King George VI), purchased a
Pembroke puppy (Rozavel Golden Eagle)as a
playmate for his daughters Elizabeth and Margaret.
Queen Elizabeth's interest in the breed has
continued throughout her life, and several lovely
Pembrokes still grace Buckingham Palace. Her
Majesty's interest in the breed, coupled with the
appearance of a Pembroke family on the cover of
Farm Journal and the Disney film "Little Dog Lost",
helped fuel America's love affair with the Pembroke
Welsh Corgi.
Man domesticated the dog to be a companion animal. We, then, bear the awesome responsibility for all dogs to
have loving homes, to receive appropriate medical care and training, to be relieved of the burden of careless
procreation, and to live a life free of hunger, illness, fear, and violence. Simply because all people can own a dog
doesn't mean they should. Careful thought to and planning for the lifestyle changes inherent to owning a dog is
necessary before including one in your life.

"Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole."
- Roger Caras, 1928-2001
Be suspicious of the
breeder that does not
ask YOU any questions
Sleepy puppy 3 weeks old, These pups
have only know KInd children and Love...
Another Sleepy puppy 6 weeks
old.
Dr Barbara Sherman, Director of the
Animal Behavior Service, gave a
presentation on Living in Harmony
with Puppies, which brought together
several important pieces of scientific
information.

The period of 3-16 weeks marks a
puppy's prime learning period for
socialization. This means it's the most
important time in a puppy's life for
developing socializing skills with their
mom, other puppies, dogs, children,
human adults, and other animals.

In fact, this is a critical period of the
puppy's life.

A rich social life during this critical
period immeasurably helps the dog in
all social aspects of its future life.
A lack of socialization during this
critical period can handicap a dog for
its entire life--including  behavior
problems whose effects can multiply
over time.
The seriousness of this situation is
that behavior problems are the
leading cause of death for dogs, with
millions of them being euthanized
every year for that reason--they never
developed the social skills to get along.

So how do you balance socialization
needs with physical health needs?

You provide play opportunities and
contact with friendly well-vaccinated
dogs and puppies. Be selective. Don't
go to the park for puppy socialization.

Friendly, easy going,calm adult dogs
who allow puppies to explore and play
in their adorable puppy ways.
Puppy classes that ensure all
participants are vaccinated are
excellent ways for pups to learn to
play with one another in positive
environments.
Additionally, during this socialization
period,it's important to provide
positive experiences by having your
puppy gently handled by your children.
If you don't have children in your
household, you can import them from
your neighborhood.
All of our puppies are checked by our
Veterinarian Dr Moyer, who is known
as being very through and gentle with
the little  pups.

A puppies development period
from birth to 6 months is the MOST
CRITICAL time of its life. What he
learns during this time will affect
the rest of his life. Your breeder
should ALWAYS be available for
questions and work closely with
you in these first critical months. I
strongly suggest getting a copy of
the Monks at New Skeete "The Art
of Raising a Puppy"and "How To
Be Your Dog's Best Friend"
available at most book stores
RUN !! -DON'T WALK-AWAY if you are taken to see the puppies or the parents that are
housed/confined in kennel runs. Always ask where the adults, parents and puppies are raised
and maintained "from birth" and into their adult life.  The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is very people
oriented and should never be raised or housed in kennel runs with limited exercise and
socialization. This tells you more about the breeder than anything else no matter what their
credentials might be.
My puppies are placed in homes to be raised with families and not in kennels. I guarantee my puppies for their life-time
in that the dog cannot be resold, transferred ownership, placed or given away. I will always take my dogs back at any
age. This eliminates my dogs from ending up in shelters or puppy mills.
My last litter,  Sire is a  Champion (one a Best in Show winner, the other a multiple
Group winner).  Dam of Litter is by 2 Champions . Both are OFA'd clear for Hips.
Both are CERF'd. Dam is OFA ,  Sire is OFA'd clear of Hip Dysplasia and Eye Cerfed.
Sire is Temperament Tested. He is an AKc Champion. and has a herding title!

My current litter:
same sire as above. Dam is By 2 Champions  - She is also OFAd for Hips  and
CERFd. Also Temperament Tested.

My puppies sold for LESS than the local pet store sells the same breed for.  IF  you
can call it the SAME BREED...

And the buyers get a health guarantee, lifetime return policy, vaccinations, etc
from me.  What do they get from a pet store or Back yard breeder?    - By Jacquie

VACCINE PROTOCAL INFORMATION
Dr. Dodd's vaccination protocol is now being adopted by ALL 27 North American veterinary schools.
VACCINATION NEWSFLASH
I would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and
cats. Some of this information will present an ethical & economic challenge to vets, and there will be skeptics. Some organizations have come up with
a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side
effects.. Politics, traditions, or the doctor's economic well being should not be a factor in medical decision.
NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY
"Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces an immunity
which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from
the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not "boosted" nor are more memory cells
induced."
Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated
hemolytic anemia. "There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines." Puppies receive antibodies
through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal
immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of the first
highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given
starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year
4 mo)
WILL PROVIDE LIFETIME IMMUNITY.
CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DOGS
Distemper & Parvo
"According to Dr. Schultz, AVMA, 8-15-95, when a vaccinations series given at 2, 3 & 4 months and again at 1 year with a MLV, puppies and kitten
program memory cells that survive for life, providing lifelong immunity." Dr. Carmichael at Cornell and Dr. Schultz have studies showing immunity
against challenge at 2-10 years for canine distemper & 4 years for parvovirus. Studies for longer duration are pending.
"There are no new strains of parvovirus as one mfg. would like to suggest. Parvovirus vaccination provides cross immunity for all types." Hepatitis
(Adenovirus) is one of the agents known to be a cause of kennel cough. Only vaccines with CAV-2 should be used as CAV-1 vaccines carry the risk of
"hepatitis blue-eye" reactions & kidney damage.
Bordetella Parainfluenza: Commonly called "Kennel cough" Recommended only for those dogs boarded, groomed, taken to dog shows, or for any
reason housed where exposed to a lot of dogs. The intranasal vaccine provides more complete and more rapid onset of immunity with less chance of
reaction. Immunity requires 72 hours and does not protect from every cause of kennel cough. Immunity is of short duration (4 to 6 months).
VACCINATIONS NOT RECOMMENDED Multiple components in vaccines compete with each other for the immune system and result in lesser immunity
for each individual disease as well as increasing the risk of a reaction. Canine Corona Virus is only a disease of puppies. It is rare, self limiting (dogs
get well in 3 days without treatment). Cornell & Texas A&M have only diagnosed one case each in the last 7 years. Corona virus does not cause
disease in adult dogs.
Leptospirosis vaccine is a common cause of adverse reactions in dogs. Most of the clinical cases of lepto reported in dogs in the US are caused by
serovaars (or types) grippotyphosa and bratsilvia. The vaccines contain different serovaars eanicola and ictohemorrhagica. Cross protection is not
provided and protection is short lived. Lepto vaccine is immuno-supressive to puppies less than 16 weeks.

Are the sire and dam tested for
genetic defects?"

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Inherited
diseases can appear in both Corgi
breeds. To avoid costly and painful
conditions later in life, BOTH parents,
grandparents too, should be tested by
qualified technicians. Insist that the
parents be x-rayed and then
evaluated for hip dysplasia by the
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
(OFA) or by a licensed veterinarian.
Don't accept the explanation that, "We
never have problems with our
breeding stock". Many problems can
not appear up until after breeding
age. Some problems may not show up
in the parents, but can appear in the
puppies. There are several eye
problems that can affect the Corgi, so
the parents should be tested by a vet
and screened by the Canine Eye
Research Foundation (CERF)
Our belief is that all dogs,  and cats purebred or
mixed breed, deserve a caring, life-long family. In
addition to our Corgis, we also share our home
and our hearts with two spayed Rescue cats,
And have re homed a  rescued Boarder
collie...For pet seekers, we strongly recommend
you look for your next dog or cat at your local
shelter. Mixed-breed dogs can be as intelligent
and healthy as their purebred cousins. Certainly
their capacity to love and be loved is no different.
We cannot state it passionately enough ~ it is
unethical and immoral to contribute to the shelter
population and the certain death that shelter
over-crowding brings by allowing unsuitable dogs
to breed! You'll have a healthier, happier, more
loving, and longer-lived friend if you ensure he is
neutered or she is spayed.
